The app shouldn’t compete with retail

If retailers feel threatened, the product is wrong — or the story is. Design the app as an aisle helper, not a replacement store.

Lottery Innovation Summit · October 19, 2026 · US lottery industry

Many retailers feel threatened by the lottery app. They’re not imagining it. If the product pitch is “buy everything in your pocket,” you’ve declared competition with the counter.

Mobile can be a partner: find a retailer, check hours, learn a game, earn loyalty that works in-store, show that digital drove a visit — not a substitute for the aisle.

App as aisle — not app as enemy.

Design the journey: awareness in the app → purchase or pickup patterns that still feed retail where policy requires or strategy prefers. Give retailers a story they can repeat: the app sends people in, it doesn’t only siphon them away.

Push and personalization matter here too. A “buy now in-app only” drumbeat trains conflict. A “your store is nearby / this week’s retail feature” drumbeat trains partnership — when it’s true.

US lottery still runs on retail trust. A mobile program that ignores that trust won’t survive the people who sell the tickets.

If retailers feel threatened, fix the product and the narrative — don’t just add a FAQ that says “we value partners.”

Real problems. Built solutions.

Lottery Innovation Summit is a challenge summit for US lottery gaming — not a conference: problems in, working demos out — not decks. Join the announcement list for when details are finalized.
